How long is the training process?

The length of the process as a whole depends upon which certification you are hoping to obtain, see the question about certifications to learn more about these requirements.

Generally, ITT’s Traumatology training is scheduled over 4 full days.  These four days have been made available in a monthly version which consists of one full Saturday per month for four months (typically Sept-Dec) OR our accelerated version of the training which is held over four consecutive weekdays (Monday-Thursday) at different points during the year.  We always post the dates of our trainings on the training page of our website or you can call our office to obtain this information.

Our Practicum training is 5 full, consecutive weekdays scheduled on an individual basis. Once trainees have completed their classroom training and are available for their practicum course their name is added to a waiting list. When training opportunities become available our staff goes down the waiting list to see which of our trainees are available for those specific dates. If the trainee is able to clear their schedule (with 2-4 weeks advance notice in most cases) then we finalize arrangements for that training.

Our Disaster Deployment and Response (Basic CISM) training is held over two full days. Typically this is scheduled in conjunction with our Accelerated Traumatology course mentioned above, which means it falls on a Friday and Saturday. This makes it convenient for those coming long distances to complete both trainings in one visit to Morgantown.

What certifications are available through this training opportunity?

You can qualify for a CTT (Certified Trauma Therapist) certification through Intensive Trauma Therapy, Inc by completing the traumatology and practicum trainings described under the questions about certification. After each trainee has demonstrated their ability to apply the methods they have learned then they will be considered for certification.

If you’d like to go a step further to obtain a CT (Clinical Traumatologist) certification through Green Cross Academy of Traumatology you can do so by completing the Disaster Deployment & Response Training hosted by ITT in addition to the Traumatology and Practicum trainings. Our office will then provide you with a letter of verification to supply Green Cross when applying for their certification. After concluding your training at ITT, the application and fee process to become a CT is handled directly by Green Cross. ITT serves as a training site for Green Cross’s certification requirements and provides verification that your training requirements have been met. More information about Green Cross Academy of Traumatology can be found at www.greencross.org.

If your interests lie solely in disaster deployment and not necessarily in using trauma therapy in a clinical setting then you only need to attend the Disaster Deployment & Response: Basic Critical Incident Stress Management (Basic CISM) training hosted by ITT. In order to qualify for the FT (Field Traumtologist) certification through Green Cross Academy of Traumatology you will be required to complete 3 FREE online courses through FEMA, which can be done before or after you complete the Basic CISM training. Following the Basic CISM training you will be provided a certificate of completion, which you will submit directly to Green Cross as part of their application process along with the verification of completing the FEMA courses.

ITT handles registration for the required trainings described above for certification through Green Cross but all applications for the CT and FT need to be directed to Green Cross.

What kinds of discounts are available?

One way to lower the $1,000 fee for the Traumatology Course (Monthly or Accelerated version) is to recruit others to attend it with you. For groups of THREE registering and paying for the course within the same 5 business day period, each individual will receive a 25% discount ($250). You are not required to pay with one check but all group members must be paid in full within the same week in order for any or all group members to qualify for the discount. Groups of 4-5 can get a discount of 25% for the first three people and 15% for the 4th and 5th person or you can recruit enough people to make two groups of three in order to receive the full discount of 25% for each group member. During registration you must identify the other members of your group in order to receive the discount.

Students and 1st Year Post-Graduates can qualify for a discount of 20% ($200) by providing proof of enrollment in a Master’s or Doctoral program (i.e. copy of semester schedule or letter from your advisor) or graduation status (i.e. copy of diploma earned or copy of transcripts that states date of graduation within one year from date of training). You are obligated to present this information upon registration in order to qualify for this discount.

Early bird specials are made available for our trainings from time to time. Please see individual training brochures for dates of early bird registration.

Also, keep in mind that we travel to provide trainings at agencies and conferences. If your agency would like to contract ITT to come to you then discounts are available depending on the size of the group. See the Training at Your Facility page for more information.

How can I find out about future offerings of ITT Trainings?

The training page of this website it updated every couple of months to keep it up-to-date with current training dates. You can also call the ITT office any time to ask about training dates, times, and locations. is another way to inquire about upcoming events. ITT typically does a mailing of brochures 2 months before each event and if your name and address aren’t already on our mailing list you can add it by going to the Contact Us page of this website.

Are continuing education units (CEUs) approved for these trainings? If so, which disciplines?

ITT is a certified provider of CEUs through the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC), West Virginia Board of Social Work Examiners (WVBSWE), West Virginia Board of Counseling Examiners (WVBCE) and the Ohio Board of Social Workers.

ITT typically applies to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) for CEUs for the Monthly and Accelerated Traumatology trainings and the Disaster Deployment and Response training. The practicum training is the only training that does not qualify for NASW credits (because the practicum is completed on an individual and cannot be applied for ahead of time). However, CEUs are provided for the practicum through NBCC, WVBCE, and WVBSWE and the Ohio Board of Social Workers.

If you wish to apply independently to your licensing board for CEU approval for the Practicum training, ITT will be happy to assist with the necessary paperwork.

At the end of each training, a Certificate of Completion is provided to each participant, which can be used to submit credit hours to your licensing board.

Why not Psychology CEUs?

The American Psychology Association (APA) has particular restrictions for trainings that lead to a certification which disqualify ITT from applying for CEUs credits through this entity. We encourage any Psychologists interested in attending any of these trainings to inquire with their state licensure board to see if NASW or NBCC approved training programs qualify toward their license requirements. For example, in the past the state of Virginia accepted NASW credits for its licensed psychologists.

West Virginia Psychologists can use some of the CEUs earned at an ITT training toward their license since only 10 of their 20 credits required in a 2 year period need to be from an APA or NASP approved training.

What will I be doing during my one-week practicum training? How do I prepare?

Once you have completed your Traumatology training, the team at ITT considers you to be at Level 2 of your training and invites you to be a temporary member of the treatment team to further your training. You’ll need to plan your week-long stay in Morgantown by making hotel reservations (see our Location page). We also encourage you to pack lunch meals for all 5 days of your training so you can participate in the working lunches with the clinical team from 12-1 pm

You will be sitting in every session the client receives during their week of treatment. The first couple of days you will be observing the other team members use each of the ITR treatment methods with the client. As the treatment team sees it appropriate you will be asked to participate clinically with the direct supervision of a team member.

The team allows time for questions each lunch hour and at the end of every day. After a senior clinician has observed the trainee display his or her new clinical skills, feedback will be provided to the trainee.
